The Summer 2025 issue of Mpls.StPaul Home & Design follows Shawn Gilliam to Santa Fe, where he met with former Twin Cities journalist Robyne Robinson, now an arts commissioner for the city. Robinson shares her favorite art museums, galleries, shops, and cultural spots—many with Minnesota ties—offering a preview of places that will likely be included in the Friends’ trip to Santa Fe being planned for next spring.

Portals in unexpected places—a refrigerator door, a fireplace, a bathroom mirror—transport visitors into the immersive Santa Fe art experience known as Meow Wolf. The 70-plus-room labyrinth, officially called House of Eternal Return, was the first permanent installation of what has since expanded to five locations, with New York and Los Angeles openings in the works. It’s just one example of how this city of 89,000 punches way above its weight in the world of art and design—and it reflects the creative spirit that drew former Twin Cities TV news anchor Robyne Robinson (@fivexfivepublicartconsultants) to first settle here 15 years ago. “There aren’t many cities where you can go white-water rafting during the day and then have dinner at a James Beard Award–winning restaurant,” says Robinson, now an arts commissioner for the City of Santa Fe and a public arts consultant.
